Days Gone By

Costuming, fashion, silent films and favorite stars, old and new.
1924 official portrait of First Lady Grace Coolidge by Howard Chandler Christy. I grew up in the D.C. area and took field trips to the White House and the Smithsonian so I saw the original painting and the dress in the First Ladies Collection at The Smithsonian.  I always loved them, though I found out later that Mr. Christy flattered Mrs. Coolidge a great deal! She was 44 when she sat for him, and was a very popular First Lady, full of out-going charm compared to her husband who was “weaned on a pickle”.
